Deep diving into toast and marmalade... 😺
... looking for Tarot-y insight into our rough-tongued Ginger Cat's behaviour...
Rags1 is one of our cats. If you’ve seen any of my more recent posts you may well have already met him. He is complex(-ish), loving (very!) and very furry… and he loves Mummy’s homemade orange and ginger marmalade on toast. 🥖
Why? 🤔
It is his daily breakfast routine, and I felt a deep dive, deeper even than the crater Rags hollows into his own specially prepared slice, would be a worthy first spread for my new Cattitude Tarot deck. I felt that the cards could interpret (and translate… Rags is Spanish 🇪🇸) each stage of his journey from the toaster’s initial clunk right through to his wide, satisfied, post-chomping grin.
My deep research began by wanting to fully understand what a cat is…

Position 1 - I can smell toast and marmalade ~ Page of Pentacles
As a keen young student of material things and pleasure, Rags has carefully studied each of the sensory inputs related to the provision of his special morning treat. He hears the clunk of the toaster, he recognises its smell whatever the distance (his sensitivity to smell is, like all cats, second to none2 )…
His gorgeous nose twitches inquisitively, and his sensory radar tells him where Mummy is with his toast. He zeroes in… firmly… and without hesitation. He has Mummy trained well, and knows that she will always be prepared for him…

Meditating on the card image, and it’s meaning, I realised that it shows a cat in a mountainous area, directly mirroring Rags’ situation, so it simply has to be him!
Position 2 - It’s MY toast and marmalade! ~ Seven of Wands
His concentration is absolute… nothing, and no-cat, can take this moment from him. His singular focus on the prize is unswerving, and he will never be successfully interrupted, no matter how many other interested sisters (or either guest) might be prepared to try! (They won’t… they’re not stupid! 😀)
His rough and rapid tongue ploughs through the toasted baguette with relentless determination, sending both butter and Mummy’s homemade orange and ginger marmalade, across the room, and down into his big white fluffy tummy. This peak experience shows he is exactly where, and when, he needs to be 😻

The higher ground image corresponds very closely to the Page of Pentacles above, so the mountainous scale of his experience is reflected in these first two stages… The message here is a simple one, fundamentally… “It’s MINE!!!” 🦁
Position 3 - Done! ~ Three of Wands
From his high, mountainous vantage point he digests his toast and marmalade. He stands upright, with a proud air and the satisfaction of a job well done. He sees other cats below in the valley, but now he has a full tummy he really doesn’t care about them anymore.
He reflects on the choices he made this morning (to run for the toast, or… simply skip rapidly) and how well they have paid off for him. It was a great experience… he stands quietly meditating on how long until his next one, before contemplating the rest of his morning and the best place to nap until lunchtime…

He knows, now, it is only a matter of time before his Daddy makes Mummy another toast and homemade marmalade breakfast, so all he has to do is stay alert and be sure to move quickly when the time comes. Life is good 😸

This reading has given me a deep understanding of what is happening for Rags at breakfast time; thanks to this first outing with the Cattitude Tarot which has yielded such profound insights… I will return to it in future whenever a deeper understanding of pussycat behaviours proves essential! Rags is short for Ragnar Lothbruk the famous Viking, and hero of the first few series of Vikings. As a kitten he was exploratory and fearsome. He cuddles… lots… these days.
I once learned that a cat has 14 times the sensitivity of a human when it comes down to smell… which, as I recall, begged the question, “why on earth do they eat catfood?”
